Members of the Part-Time Chapter of the Rutgers AAUP, representing approximately 1000 part-time lecturers (PTLs) who teach about 30% of courses at RU, voted today to accept a tentative agreement that was reached at the 11th hour before the first day of classes this term. The turnout in the ratification balloting was far greater than that for any previous ballot with an overwhelming vote for acceptance of the new contract.
"We’re happy to move forward with implementation of the terms of this new agreement. Many talented and hard-working teachers have been waiting a long time for a salary increase," observed Ratna Karmakar, president of the PTLF-AAUP. "The new contract includes reasonable advancements in salary, due process and professional development, but we still have a full agenda for the next round, including health benefits, tuition remission, and pro-rata pay."
